Decayed Teeth

What are the Main Causes of Tooth Decay?

Diet and poor dental hygiene are the main causes of tooth decay. The sugars and starches in the foods combine with the bacteria that live in the mouth and form acids. These acids damage the tooth enamel and cause decay. For healthy teeth, it is best to avoid foods and drinks with high sugar content. Also, brush the teeth at least twice a day using toothpaste that contains fluoride, and use an antimicrobial mouth rinse to reduce plaque formation. Making sure you visit us regularly for check-ups and dental cleanings will help to greatly reduce your risk.

How is Tooth Decay Treated?

Treating decayed teeth depends on the extent of the decay. If the damage has not yet reached the nerve of tooth, our dentist usually removes the decayed tooth structure and replaces it with a dental filling. If the decay has already reached the nerve of the tooth, a root canal treatment may be performed.
